"I'd rather fight 100 structure fires than a wildfire. With a structure fire you know where your flames are, but in the woods it can move anywhere; it can be right up behind you"- Tom Watson
What is a wildfire? Well a wildfire is fire that goes out of control in the wilderness, for example a forest that sets on fire.
A wildfire can happen by natural causes like a lightning strike and set fire, or campers that set up a campfire to keep warm at night, but when this happens campers or hikers might not take care of the fire proper, meaning if they leave the site it, it can burt into flames.
Wildfires are common in wild land settings where there are many forests or trees at one place. They are also common in dry and hot weather, or a period of very little rain.
How to stay safe from a wildfire, make sure that in your house you have working smoke alarms in every room, if you see a wildfire call 911, be sure to have a fire extinguisher just in case the fire travels to your home.
Three conditions need to be present for a wildfire, fuel, oxygen, and a heat source.
If you have never heard of a wildfire you might know them by a different name such as Wild land fires, forest fires, or wood fires.
In 1990 to 2015 there have been over 429 deaths because of wildfires in the U.S, In the past twenty five years over 101 million acres burned down because of wildfires in the U.S.
On average about 100,000 wildfires burn a year, it can burn over 5,000,000 acres of property a year. When wildfires starts, they are often
.unnoticed until they are a big problem. The largest wildfire burned more then 3 million acres in Idaho and Montana. Firefighters fight wildfires by either removing vegetation around the fire to contain it or spray it with water and fire retardants.
Predicting a wildfire: The climate of the area effects the risk of wildfires because the hotter it is, the more chances there are for a wildfire to happen. Also, forests are tested by using a microscope to examine if tree bark has sap. A low sap level shows that the forest will easily spread a fire.
